Nicolas Jaar has completely blown me away. Read a very good piece about him:

Merril Garbus
Merril Garbus is a complete badass. Her stage name is Tune Yards, and she was the best thing I saw live all of last year. Her voice is that of a young woman, an African man, a mythical brave goddess- she takes on many guises through her music and rules them all. This woman is a MUST SEE live. That's all.
Terri Walker
Terri Walker's teamed up with Ski Beatz, the producer behind Reasonable Doubt, for her new album. It's a shame people like Ms Walker have to go to America to find an audience that can appreciate this kind of contemporary soul, but essentially this is an American sound from a singer who's just surprisingly British.

That Ghost
That Ghost makes me want to go to California. Stoner vibes, muffled drums, achey-breaky vocals...yesyesyes.
Vybz Kartel: The Tyler Durden of Dancehall
Vybz Kartel did for Clarks what no marketing team could ever hope to achieve. Will the same be true for CAKE SOAP?! Vybz is now endorsing the skin-bleaching product 'Cake Soap' and Jamaica is in uproar. Vybz is taking his promotional duties so seriously that he now looks like the most terrifying man in Jamaica...
The backlash has seen his music banned from the Jamaican air-waves for the duration of Black History month, however, how it's affected Cake Soap sales...I've got no idea. Here's what Vybz has to say:
"I'm my own man, and as such I do my own thing. When black women stop straightening their hair and wearing wigs and weaves, when white women stop getting lip and butt injections and implants, when bald men stop getting hair transplants, and when people stop getting nose jobs and cosmetic surgery then I'll stop using the 'cake soap' and we'll all live naturally ever after."

Silkie
An accomplished and impressively consistent musical craftsman with an astounding work ethic. With a dexterous display of verstility, not only does Silkie create some of the most intricate and mellifluous music in the UK bass scene, he also manages to fill dance floors of all capacity with his dynamic weighty bass fuelled anthems. His jazz infused melodies, combined with his perfectly executed drum patterns laced over bubbling basslines often evokes imagery of the highest cosmic order. The enchanting sonorous concoctions Silkie conjures always provokes an uncontrollable urge in me to get up and dance, even with an ipod on public transport. With a truly engaging DJ set, witnessing Silkie take command of a boat party in the middle of the Adriatic sea is still one of my most enjoyable music experiences yet.

James Franco looks permanently lean. If you've never seen Freaks and Geeks, fix up. Written and directed by Judd Apatow it's a post-'My So Called Life'...My So Called Life. Starring all your favourite people, it's funny, moving, really well written, and James Franco is...

Wil
Last night I encountered a group of guys who vehemently hate James Blake. I didn't think this was possible, but apparently in West London, there are a few. They claim that the album is vaccuous, and at the suggestion that his voice has soul- I thought they were going to beat me down. They also claimed that half the album has been stolen from his dad- which is just an aggressive way of claiming that because he refixed (completely refixed) an old song of his father's, the whole album must be some cheap immitation. It will take me too long to dissect why they're completely wrong, so instead I'm just going to post his dad's song and say those Blakes must have great genes....

Ginsberg Beats
This weekend I'm going to go check out the Angelheaded Hipsters collection at The National Theatre. It features a collection of photos taken by Allen Ginsberg; I saw Patti Smith talking about when she first met him the other day, and am excited to see her feature in the exhibition. It's an insight into the beat writers of the 50s and 60s, and another glimpse of the city I'm so desperate to visit! Also, look out for James Franco's turn as Ginsberg in the upcoming film 'Howl', see below- as if we needed any more reasons to love you Mr Franco...
Never No More
Whatever future RnB stars we look set to produce in the forthcoming years, I strongly believe none shall fill the shoes of the dearly departed Aaliyah. Devoid of the warbling inclinations of many recent RnB heroines, Aaliyah was understated, soulful, and probably the coolest girl to have ever crossed the Atlantic. She inspired Timbaland and Missy Elliot's best work, and putting her romantic dabblings with R Kelly aside- as role model's go, she was definitely up there. Aaliyah, I love you.

How To Dress Well
I love RnB, and so even the idea of How To Dress Well had me excited. A guy who combines RnB with electronic music and 2-step, amazing. Apparently Tom Krell isn't so exciting live, but having watched this masterful vocal by him thanks to Yours Truly- I think whoever said that must be a hateful liar...simply.

La Blogotheque
If you've never checked out La Blogotheque, stop everything and go forth. Film-maker and music enthusiast Vincent Moon pairs his passions to bring us what's now a little libraries' worth of single-shot sessions, with bands whose reputations precede them. The results are sublime and the quality of the acts taking part are testament to Moon's skill and execution. Here's one of my favourites:

Slime
Slime's music seems even more appealing by the pure fact he doesn't seem quite sure he wants it heard yet. For what could essentially be considered just Beat Music, there's an aching sense of introspectiveness in Slime's efforts. First Cape makes me wish I was on my way somewhere special, or just simply anywhere but here.
